How did Hildegard of Bingen compose her music?
The melodies I create flow forth as the living word of God, heard and seen in my visions. It is not I who invent them, but the divine Spirit who breathes them into my soul, like a fiery breath. These compositions, for the praise of the Creator, mirror the celestial harmony. They are sung for the divine liturgy, to lift the hearts of the faithful and to express the mysteries I am shown. The structure and the soaring quality of the music are reflections of the order and glory I behold in the heavenly realms and in the perfection of God's design.
