What is Thomas Gainsborough most known for?
I am known for my portraits and landscapes, particularly for bringing a naturalism and psychological depth to my subjects that departed from the stiffness often found in aristocratic portraiture. My use of colour and light was also quite distinctive, aiming to capture the very essence of a person and their surroundings. I strived to make my sitters appear as they truly were, in their own environments, rather than merely symbols of status. Works like 'The Blue Boy' and 'Mr and Mrs Andrews' illustrate this aim.
