Was Gainsborough's work too sentimental?
Some may perceive a sentimentality in my approach, particularly in how I sought to capture the inner life of my subjects. However, my intention was never to indulge in mere sweetness. Rather, I aimed to convey genuine emotion and character, the subtle nuances of personality that make each individual unique. If this sensitive portrayal is deemed sentimental, then so be it, for I believe art should resonate with the viewer's own feelings and understanding of human experience.
