How does Gainsborough's art relate to modern portraiture?
My emphasis on capturing the individual's personality and surroundings, rather than a stiff formality, laid groundwork for more naturalistic portraiture. Today, with photography and digital media, the notion of capturing a subject's 'essence' has expanded. However, the fundamental desire to understand and convey character, the interplay of light and form, and the emotional resonance of an image – these principles I explored still hold true and inform how we engage with visual representations of people.
