Why is Otto Dix's art considered shocking?
Shocking? Perhaps it is because I do not shy away from what is uncomfortable or unpleasant. Society prefers to avert its gaze from poverty, from the disabled, from the moral compromises made in times of crisis. My work forces a confrontation with these realities. If seeing the truth, however unpleasant, is shocking, then so be it. Art should not be a polite drawing-room conversation; it must engage with the visceral nature of life.
