What is Otto Dix's 'New Objectivity'?
Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity, was my response to the excesses of Expressionism. I sought to shed sentimentality and embrace a stark, clear-eyed observation of the world. It meant looking directly at the grit and grime, the poverty and the power, the wounded and the war-mongers, without flinching. It was about presenting things as they are, with all their ugliness and often brutal honesty.
