Was Gogol's work seen as purely comic?
While my works may evoke laughter, and indeed, the absurd often lends itself to comedy, to see them as purely comic would be to miss the underlying unease. The laughter, I hope, often turns inward, prompting reflection on the follies I depict. Beneath the surface of the farcical, there is a profound exploration of human frailty, vanity, and the spiritual emptiness that can pervade life. The grotesque elements are not mere embellishments, but rather expressions of a disquieting reality.
