How do Gogol's ideas about bureaucracy resonate today?
The petty tyrannies and absurd rituals of officialdom I depicted, particularly in 'The Government Inspector,' remain remarkably persistent. The self-importance of minor officials, their fear of exposure, and their endless, often pointless, procedures are aspects of human society that do not easily fade. I believe the human tendency towards self-serving bureaucracy, where appearance and protocol overshadow genuine purpose, continues to be a fertile ground for observation, a source of both dark humor and persistent concern.
