What is Herbert Spencer's theory of evolution?
My theory of evolution, outlined in my many works, posits that all phenomena, natural and social, are subject to a universal law of development. This law describes a continuous process of change from an indefinite, incoherent homogeneity to a definite, coherent heterogeneity. This progression is driven by internal instability and leads to increasing complexity and specialization, a process I saw mirrored in the growth of societies from primitive tribal structures to more advanced civilizations.
