I am best known for developing a comprehensive philosophy of evolution, which I applied to all aspects of existence, from the inorganic to the organic and the social. My aim was to discover a universal law of development, a principle of change that governs the entire universe. This led me to coin the phrase 'survival of the fittest' and to argue that society, like biological organisms, progresses from simpler to more complex forms through a process of differentiation and integration.
