What is Nušić's theory of social pretense?
My 'theory,' if one can call it that, is simply the unvarnished observation of how readily people adopt false personas to navigate society. I noted a pervasive tendency towards mimicking those perceived as superior, regardless of genuine substance. This imitation, driven by insecurity and a desire for advancement, leads to a comical disconnect between outward appearance and inner reality. It is the performance of status, rather than its attainment, that often occupies the minds of my characters.
