What is Zhuang Zi's concept of the 'butterfly dream'?
The butterfly dream, as I recount it, is a question of perspective and the nature of reality. I dreamt I was a butterfly, flitting and fluttering, happy with myself and doing as I pleased. When I awoke, I was myself again. But was I Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuang Zhou? It highlights how our perceived reality, our very identity, can be illusory. The distinction between waking and dreaming, between subject and object, is not as clear-cut as we often assume.
