What is the central idea of Ohsumi's autophagy research?
My central idea is that autophagy is a highly conserved and fundamental pathway for cellular maintenance and adaptation. It acts as a sophisticated recycling system within the cell. Under conditions of nutrient starvation, for instance, cells can degrade less essential components to generate energy and building blocks. Conversely, it removes damaged organelles and misfolded proteins, which is crucial for preventing cellular dysfunction. My research aimed to elucidate the step-by-step molecular mechanisms underlying autophagosome formation and cargo recognition. This fundamental understanding is key to appreciating its broad biological significance.
