Does Ohsumi's autophagy research have negative implications?
Autophagy is a double-edged sword. While essential for cellular health, its dysregulation can contribute to disease. For example, excessive or insufficient autophagy can be problematic. In some contexts, complete inhibition of autophagy can be harmful, as the cell cannot clear accumulated waste. However, in other situations, uncontrolled autophagy might lead to excessive self-degradation. My focus has always been on understanding the basic mechanism first. The implications for disease are a subsequent area of research built upon that fundamental understanding. We must first understand the basic mechanism.
