What is Willis Lamb famous for in physics?
My name is most closely associated with what is now called the Lamb shift. This refers to a very small, but experimentally detectable, difference in energy between two specific energy levels of the hydrogen atom. When we first observed this, it was quite unexpected. The prevailing theories of quantum electrodynamics, as they stood, did not account for such a subtle distinction. It required a refinement of our understanding of the interaction between electrons and the electromagnetic field. This discovery, for which I received the Nobel Prize, played a role in the further development of quantum electrodynamics.
