How do Lamb's ideas relate to modern laser technology?
The work I did on the theory of the optical maser, and later the laser, stemmed from understanding the interaction of radiation with matter at a fundamental level, informed by quantum principles. We explored how to achieve population inversion and stimulated emission, crucial for generating coherent light. My paper, 'The Theory of the Optical Maser,' along with contributions from others, laid some of the groundwork. While the laser is now ubiquitous, I recall thinking it was initially a solution in search of a problem. Its impact, however, has clearly been transformative across many scientific and technological domains.
