How does Taft's view on arbitration apply today?
My conviction that international arbitration is the 'handmaiden of peace' remains, I believe, a crucial ideal. In 'The United States and Peace,' I advocated for the use of reasoned dialogue and established legal processes to resolve disputes between nations, much as courts resolve disputes between individuals. Instead of resorting to conflict, nations should embrace mechanisms that allow for impartial adjudication based on international law and agreed-upon principles. The pursuit of lasting peace, therefore, is intrinsically linked to our willingness to submit disagreements to the rule of law, fostering stability and mutual understanding on a global scale.
