How did Herschel map the Milky Way?
My approach to mapping the heavens was characterized by an unwavering commitment to systematic observation and meticulous recording. I employed what I termed 'star gauging,' a method of counting stars within defined small areas of the sky. By observing in numerous directions and analyzing the density of stars, I was able to infer the general shape and extent of our star system, the Sidereal Universe. This methodical process, repeated over countless nights, allowed me to chart the distribution of stars with unprecedented detail.
