Was Quasimodo's poetry too obscure?
Some have found my work difficult, perhaps too concise, or bearing the marks of what they termed 'hermeticism.' They have asked 'Non chiederci la parola' (Do not ask us for the word), suggesting that in certain times, the poet cannot offer simple answers. My intention was never obscurity for its own sake, but to strip away the noise, the facile pronouncements, to reach a more profound, more authentic expression. The image, the metaphor, the precisely chosen word – these are not impediments to understanding, but the very tools by which deeper truths are revealed. The reader must engage, must enter the silence and the resonance.
