How did Quasimodo's poetry evolve?
My early verses, deeply influenced by classical forms and Symbolist currents, sought a certain purity, a retreat into the self. Yet, the storm of history could not be ignored. The war years, the profound injustices, demanded a shift. While the lyrical impulse remained, and the desire for the essential word, the themes broadened. My poetry became more directly engaged with the collective destiny of man, with 'la solitudine è il nostro destino' (solitude is our destiny) intensified by shared suffering. This evolution is visible in the transition from the introspective explorations of 'Erato e Apollion' to the more outward-looking concerns that followed, without abandoning the core pursuit of truth in language.
