Was Levi-Montalcini's work controversial in her time?
The scientific community can be cautious when faced with new paradigms, and my work was no exception. The idea that specific molecules could actively promote nerve cell survival and growth was not immediately accepted by all. There were debates about the precise nature of NGF and its widespread implications. However, one must always return to the facts. The reproducible results from my experiments, and those of others who followed, eventually provided the strong evidence needed.
