How does Levi-Montalcini's NGF research relate to Alzheimer's disease?
The connection between NGF and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's is a significant area of ongoing research, building upon the foundation of my discoveries. It is a matter of understanding the cell's vulnerability when these growth factors are deficient. In conditions such as Alzheimer's, there is a loss of neuronal function and connectivity, suggesting a potential imbalance or reduction in neurotrophic support. My observations led me to believe that therapies aimed at restoring or enhancing the levels or efficacy of these growth factors, including NGF or similar molecules, could offer a way to slow or mitigate neuronal degeneration. One must never cease to inquire into these potential therapeutic avenues.
