How did Levi-Montalcini's experiments lead to the discovery of NGF?
My approach was deeply empirical, relying on meticulous observation and experimentation, often under challenging circumstances. We worked with chick embryos, a readily available and transparent model system. By implanting certain tissues, like mouse sarcoma 180 cells, and observing their effect on nerve growth, my observations led me to believe there was a potent substance being secreted. The sheer profusion of nerve fibers around these implants was undeniable. We had to carefully isolate and purify the source of this growth stimulation. The essential aspect was to follow the evidence, to return to the facts, and to meticulously dissect the biological processes at play to understand the mechanism of life.
