How did Kapitsa discover superfluidity?
Discovery, for me, is always rooted in meticulous experimentation. We were investigating the properties of liquid helium at very low temperatures, pushing the limits of what was achievable. It was during these investigations, carefully measuring viscosity and heat conductivity, that we observed a dramatic change. The fluid suddenly exhibited almost no resistance to flow. This was not something easily predicted by existing theories; it was a direct observation from a well-designed experiment. The data itself pointed to a new state of matter, a consequence of quantum effects becoming macroscopic.
