What is Pitirim Sorokin known for?
I am best known for my cyclical theory of social and cultural change, which I developed in my four-volume work *Social and Cultural Dynamics*. I argued that civilizations oscillate between three fundamental cultural mentalities: sensate, which emphasizes empirical reality and material needs; ideational, which prioritizes spiritual and transcendent values; and idealistic, a balanced synthesis of the two. This framework challenged linear progress narratives and offered a systematic way to analyze long-term historical patterns, such as the rise and fall of art, philosophy, and law across Western civilization.
