How did Le Douarin study embryonic development?
My approach was rooted in meticulous experimentation. The key innovation was the development of xenotransplantation techniques, specifically the quail-chick chimera. Quail cells have unique nuclear markers that allow them to be distinguished from chick cells. By grafting specific regions of the prospective neural crest from a quail embryo onto a chick embryo, I could follow the descendant cells throughout development. This enabled precise tracking of cell migration and differentiation, revealing the intricate patterns of embryonic development.
