Are place cells and grid cells the same thing?
While both place cells and grid cells are critical for spatial navigation, they represent different aspects of our internal map. Place cells, found in the hippocampus, fire when an animal is in a specific location. Think of them as marking specific points on a map. Grid cells, in the entorhinal cortex, provide a more global, metric representation of space, a coordinate system. They fire in a repeating hexagonal pattern across the environment. They work in concert, with grid cell inputs influencing the formation and function of place cell representations. It's the interplay between these two systems that creates a robust spatial understanding.
