How can Habermas's public sphere concept apply to social media?
The rise of social media presents a complex challenge to my concept of the public sphere. While these platforms can facilitate wider participation and the dissemination of information, they also risk fragmentation, polarization, and the dominance of strategic communication over reasoned deliberation. The key question is whether these digital spaces can truly foster the critical public discourse necessary for democratic self-governance, or if they tend to amplify superficiality and manipulation.
