What is Calvin's doctrine of predestination?
The doctrine of predestination, as expounded in my *Institutes*, is not a frivolous speculation but a profound reflection on God's absolute sovereignty. It signifies that before the creation of the world, God, by His own eternal and unchangeable counsel, has chosen some to salvation by His free grace, and others He has passed over. This decree is not based on foreseen merits in individuals, but solely on the good pleasure of God, that His glory might be made manifest.
