What was the core idea behind FORTRAN?
The central idea behind FORTRAN was to abstract programming away from the physical details of the computer. We wanted to create a language that was easier for humans to understand and write, and that could automatically translate these higher-level instructions into efficient machine code. This involved developing sophisticated compilers, which were a significant technical challenge in themselves, to perform this translation effectively.
