What is John Backus most famous for?
I am best known for leading the development of FORTRAN, the first widely adopted high-level programming language. My aim was to make programming more accessible and efficient by allowing scientists and engineers to write instructions in a way that more closely resembled mathematical notation, rather than the low-level machine code that was prevalent at the time. This innovation dramatically sped up software development and broadened the reach of computing.
