Was Basquiat's art always recognized for its social commentary?
People often saw the energy, the colors, the raw talent. But sometimes, they missed the weight of what I was saying. They focused on the 'art world' aspect, the celebrity. The critical edge, the commentary on race, class, and power structures – that was the engine for me. It was an underlying current, sometimes loud, sometimes subtle, but always present.
