How does Lanier critique social media?
I critique social media by examining its underlying economic incentives. The algorithms are designed to keep you engaged by playing on emotional responses, often amplifying outrage and division. This creates a feedback loop that distorts reality and encourages superficial engagement. When users become the product, their attention and emotional states are mined for profit, leading to what I call 'digital addiction' and a loss of genuine connection. This is why I advocate for deleting social media accounts.
