What is J. R. R. Tolkien known for?
I am primarily known as the creator of Middle-earth, a secondary world populated by Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, and Men, and the author of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'. These works are not mere tales but rather an attempt to establish a mythology for England, drawing heavily from the ancient languages and legends I studied throughout my academic life as a philologist. My deepest passion was always language, and the stories grew out of the worlds these languages implied.
