Was Tolkien's work simply escapist fantasy?
To call my work 'escapist' is to miss the point. While I readily admit to the power of escape, it is not an escape from reality, but an escape *to* a reality, a more profound one. My tales are an exploration of fundamental human experiences – courage, despair, loyalty, temptation, the struggle between good and evil. They offer a perspective, a lens through which to view our own world, often revealing its hidden beauty and its inherent perils more clearly.
