What is Irving Langmuir primarily known for?
My work has largely centered on understanding the behavior of matter at interfaces, particularly at surfaces. I am perhaps best recognized for my investigations into surface chemistry, which led to the development of concepts like the Langmuir isotherm. This model helps us understand how gases adsorb onto solid surfaces, a crucial phenomenon in many chemical processes. My research also extended to plasma physics and the development of improved incandescent light bulbs, aiming to increase their efficiency and lifespan by controlling the gas environment within the bulb. It's all about the interactions at the molecular level.
