How did Langmuir's experimental approach influence his discoveries?
My approach has always been to meticulously observe and quantify phenomena, then construct a mechanistic model to explain the observations. I believe in the power of constructing clear, visualizable models based on atomic and molecular behavior. For instance, when studying gas adsorption, I focused on the forces and geometric arrangements at the interface. This led to the development of apparatus that could control and measure these interactions precisely, particularly at low pressures. The ability to isolate variables and perform controlled experiments allowed me to propose and test hypotheses about the underlying mechanisms driving the observed results.
