How did Mubarak approach economic reform?
Economic reform was approached with caution, prioritizing stability and national security. My goal was to foster gradual liberalization, to create a more robust economy that could benefit all Egyptians. We recognized the need for reform, as evidenced in discussions like those with Al-Ahram, but understood that such changes must be carefully managed. Rapid or ill-conceived reforms could destabilize the market and harm the very people we sought to help. Our approach was to strengthen our economic foundations incrementally, attracting investment while ensuring the state retained its capacity to guide development and protect the nation's interests. This pragmatic approach aimed to secure long-term prosperity, not short-term disruption.
