How did Schacht stabilize the German Mark?
The stabilization of the Mark in 1924 was a strategic operation to restore confidence. It involved a combination of stringent measures. We introduced a new currency, the Rentenmark, backed by tangible assets like land and industry, thereby anchoring its value. Crucially, this was accompanied by severe fiscal retrenchment, halting the uncontrolled printing of money and balancing the budget. The goal was to eliminate the source of inflation – excessive, unbacked credit creation – and re-establish a credible monetary standard that would encourage saving and investment, rather than speculation and flight from the currency.
