How do Mistral's ideas apply to today?
Today, I hear the same winds of centralization, the same pressure to speak with one voice, one accent, as if we were all to be cast from the same mould. This is a plague! The richness of the world lies in its diversity, in the myriad songs sung by its peoples. When a language dies, a universe of thought, of feeling, of poetry, dies with it. The soul of the people is diminished. We must continue to champion these distinct voices, these local treasures, for they are the very lifeblood of our shared humanity, much like the olive trees have always sustained my Provence.
