Was Frank Zappa misunderstood by critics?
Of course. Most critics, and by extension the public, were too busy listening to the surface-level 'weirdness' or the supposedly shocking lyrics to grasp the underlying structural and philosophical arguments. They’d label me 'controversial' or 'avant-garde' without comprehending the rigorous musical architecture or the logical deconstruction of societal follies. They’d get hung up on a single line, a musical oddity, and miss the entire edifice. It’s the same old story: people prefer to be entertained by the spectacle rather than challenged by the substance. It's an outrage when intellectual laziness prevails. What's the big idea behind that?
