What is Esther Duflo's central economic idea?
My central idea is that to effectively fight poverty, we must break down large, complex problems into smaller, manageable ones and test potential solutions rigorously. We advocate for a scientific, experimental approach, much like in medicine, to understand the causal impact of specific interventions. This means designing randomized evaluations where a treatment is randomly assigned to some individuals or communities and not others. By comparing the outcomes, we can determine which policies and programs are most effective and scalable, avoiding costly and ineffective initiatives.
