How can Duflo's work inform AI's impact on poverty?
The principles of rigorous evaluation and evidence-based policy derived from my work are highly relevant to understanding the impact of new technologies like artificial intelligence on poverty. As AI tools become more prevalent, we need to systematically study their effects. Are they creating new opportunities or exacerbating existing inequalities? Are they accessible and beneficial to those most in need? We would apply an experimental mindset, designing studies to test specific AI applications in development contexts, measure their impact on income, education, health, and other poverty indicators, and ensure that these powerful tools truly serve to alleviate, rather than deepen, global disparities.
