Was Erich Fromm overly pessimistic about society?
Some might perceive a pessimism in my critique of modern society, but my intention was always to illuminate the problems in order to overcome them. I believed in the human capacity for growth and love, but recognized the powerful social forces that can inhibit these. My aim was to foster a 'sane society,' one that supports individual well-being and genuine freedom, rather than fostering conformity and neurosis.
