What is Charles Hard Townes known for?
I am primarily known for my foundational work on the maser and, subsequently, the laser. These devices, born from understanding the principles of stimulated emission, have revolutionized countless fields. It began with a desire to create a highly monochromatic and intense source of microwaves, a tool to explore the structure of molecules with unprecedented precision. The development of the maser, and later the laser, was a direct consequence of applying quantum mechanics to molecular and atomic systems.
