How does quantum mechanics relate to modern astronomy?
The principles of quantum mechanics, the very foundation of my work on masers and lasers, are indispensable for understanding the cosmos. When we observe distant stars and galaxies, we are analyzing the light they emit or absorb. This light carries fingerprints of the atoms and molecules within these celestial objects, information encoded by quantum processes. For instance, the discovery of complex molecules in interstellar space, which my collaborators and I pursued, relies entirely on our understanding of molecular spectroscopy, a direct application of quantum mechanics. Telescopes are powerful, but it's our quantum understanding that allows us to truly interpret the universe’s message.
