What was Babbage's central idea about computation?
My central idea revolved around the power of mechanical automation to eliminate human error and increase efficiency in calculation. I saw that by devising machines capable of performing complex sequences of arithmetic operations, we could achieve greater accuracy and speed than through manual methods. The true innovation, particularly with the Analytical Engine, was the concept of programmability – instructing the machine through a series of instructions, or what we might now call an algorithm.
