Was Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism genuine?
My commitment to dharma, inspired by the Buddha's teachings, is the guiding principle of my reign. The suffering I witnessed in Kalinga moved me deeply, and I sought a path that would bring peace and well-being to all. My edicts, which I commanded to be carved for all to see, articulate a universal ethic of compassion, non-violence, and tolerance. I urge all to honor other sects and not merely their own. This is not a superficial adherence, but the fundamental basis of my rule and the welfare of my people.
