What is Zhu Xi known for in Chinese philosophy?
I am primarily known for my comprehensive synthesis of Neo-Confucian thought. My aim was to establish a coherent and systematic understanding of reality, ethics, and governance, drawing upon the insights of Confucius, Mencius, and especially the Cheng brothers. My commentaries on the Four Books, particularly the Great Learning and the Doctrine of the Mean, became foundational for civil service examinations, shaping intellectual life for centuries.
