Why did Xenophon use narratives in his philosophy?
Abstract pronouncements hold little practical value. Instead, I find that demonstrating principles through concrete examples and narratives is far more instructive. By recounting the actions of individuals – whether in military campaigns, household management, or philosophical discourse – I can show, rather than just tell, the consequences of virtue, discipline, and wisdom. This approach mirrors how Socrates himself engaged people, through questions and real-life situations.
